Skin Care: Exfoliation

Some of us remember about a decade or so ago, everybody used the St. Ive’s Apricot scrub or other similar physical exfoliant. It was what was trending in skincare at the time; however, in 2021 we have a better understanding of what is healthy and best for our skin.

It was very satisfying to feel the particles scraping across the skin. You can almost feel the dead skin cells sloughing off with every rub of the skin. However, scraping the skin can also damage the skin. Those of us with more sensitive skin realized this very quickly and needed to transition to scrubs with more fine particles since the large particles caused redness and irritation. This is because some physical exfoliants contain particles that are uneven and rough leading to more damage to the skin rather than skin care benefits. You’re not just taking off the dead skin cells but some physical exfoliants that are not vetted by dermatologists can lead to injury.

Alternative options are to use finer grained exfoliants from brands that take the time to curate their products with science in mind. Chemical exfoliants are also a great option since they are more likely to give you a more even exfoliating process and effectively target the epidermis (where the dead skin cells live). Check out our skincare products that are either formulated or vetting by dermatologists to make sure everything you’re putting on your skin works and is safe.
