Is Home Microneedling Safe?

Microneedling has a wide array of benefits when done professionally. It’s a safe way to improve the appearance of wrinkles by promoting collagen production, reducing the appearance of large pores, as well as break down scars and stretch marks. It’s gained popularity throughout the years to the point where there are at home microneedling kits available on the market. However, are these products as safe as the ones you get professionally?

The short answer is that the quality of home microneedling is lower than the quality of professionally done services. There are three reasons for the discrepancy:

  1. Hygiene – Microneedling equipment is sterilized at clinics meaning they are run through a special machine called an autoclave that processes them so that there are no bacteria present on the needles. This is not possible for microneedles at home since simply cleaning them with soap and water does not remove all of the bacteria. When these unsterile needles penetrate the skin barrier which your body is sensitive, you run the risk of infection.

  2. Frequency – Microneedling is not a practice that should not be done every day. The entire process involves allowing the skin to repair the small damages that were done by the skin thus stimulating collagen production. However, using the microneedles everyday causes more skin damage than your body can repair. In the end, users who are overzealous about their at-home treatments hurt their skin more than help it.

  3. Technique – Microneedling at a professional office involves the needle contacting the skin in an up and down motion. Microneedling kits at home are often in the form of rollers where the user rolls a series of needles across their face. This rolling motion can cause drag on the skin which injures it more than the straight up and down motion done in clinics.

Overall, professional microneedling is more hygienic and precise allowing for patients to fully unlock the benefits of microneedling.
