All About Acne Series: Treatment Part 2

Acne is an extremely common skin problem that 90% of the population will experience at some point in their life and is simply the obstruction of hair follicles. In our previous blogs, we discussed the stages of acne, causes of acne, and some treatments. In this blog, we will continue our discussion on acne treatments.

Stage 3: Bacterial proliferation

Benzoyl peroxide is a skin care ingredient that is heavily anti-bacterial and is the mainstay of topical antibacterial treatment in acne. If you have ever used Proactive those products were benzoyl peroxide based. Other acids such as salicylic, glycolic, and azelaic acid have some anti-bacterial effects as well.

Stage 4: Inflammation

The great news is that by treating the first 3 stages, you are already decreasing skin inflammation since stage 4 is caused by stages 1-3. However, there are some ingredients that directly decrease inflammation. These include niacinamide and retinoids.

Many of the skin care ingredients mentioned are available over the counter and for cheap prices. Most of these products can be obtained under $10; however, everyone’s skin is different, so trial and error is encouraged to find a product that works best for you. Much of acne treatment and maintenance is also lifestyle related, and we will touch on this at a later blog. If you are finding difficulty treating acne over the counter, make an appointment with a dermatologist as they can guide you through prescription treatment plans. Stay tuned for our next blog!

At Solangel Med Spa, we fuse science, technology, and skin care to deliver the best results so you can look and feel your best. With treatments targeting anti-aging, skin brightness (such as our vitamin C skin care products, vitamin C Micro-derm polish, and vitamin C serums), hyperpigmentation, acne and more, there is a treatment out there for whatever goals you have.
