What Causes Age Spots and How to Get Rid of Them

Age spots (or sometimes also called sunspots or liver spots) are incredibly common in adults but are especially common in those over 50. They are generally harmless and are caused by sun exposure over time. Because UV rays are harmful to the skin, pigment cells in the skin over produce a pigment called melanin to protect itself. Overtime, people accumulate these areas of hyperpigmentation on the face, shoulders, and other areas that receive increased sun exposure. While perfectly normal, some people want to lighten these areas. This can be accomplished through several procedures:

1.  Laser Treatment

Laser therapy will destroy the cells that are producing the extra pigment effectively lightening the skin in the areas that are darker.

 2.  Cryotherapy
During cryotherapy, liquid nitrogen is applied to affected areas. The cold injures the cells in the area. When they start healing, the pigment will disappear, and the skin will be lighter creating more even complexion.

 3. Dermabrasion/Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion creates small injuries to the skin which the body will react in avid effort to heal itself. In the process, pigments become lighter. Microdermabrasion tends to be gentler than dermabrasion.

4. Chemical Peeling

This method of chemical exfoliation removes the top layers of skin. When new skin cells take their place, they are lighter and fresher.
